About Dr Nelson

I am a great choice to work with you !

Why should you benefit from my experience and knowledge instead of some other dentist?

Thanks for asking!

-I've always been inquisitive and learning/education is topmost in my professional life.

some people spend their entire career just getting by...they have one years' experience for 20 to 30 years.

I am constantly learning and I believe I can give you better care because I have constantly improved my skills and knowledge! I attended the American Dental Association meeting 2010, where I learned some great new techniques to work with Autistic children, use of lasers in treatment and more health issues affected by the oral system.

People, their health and their well-being, are what have been my motivation to provide quality dental care in Kansas City for over 30 years.

In our office; we Create and preserve SMILES: provide quality and valuable dental services to the people who are my friends and patients. ...which means you get quality care backed up by experience and integrity!

Establish a REAL relationship! Create a DENTAL HOME for you and your family.

Getting to know you and your family while we preserve and optimize your health will be an awesome opportunity for me and my staff! .....your benefit: a health team that knows and understands YOUR particular needs...you are not just another number   (hey that's called service)

I am fortunate to come from a background of health care providers for several generations. My father and three of his brothers were physicians, my aunts were pharmacists and teachers.

I had always wanted to be a teacher and after receiving my Bachelor of Science degree (Chemistry/Biology) from The University of New Mexico, I started to work on my MS and PhD. I received a Master of Science Degree in Microbiology and my Doctor of Dental Surgery Diploma from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry.

Continuing dental education has been a lifelong pursuit for me and my office staff ever since graduation. Each year my staff and I take over fifty hours (50) of dental and medical education courses, primarily with the Kansas Dental Association / Fifth District Dental Society, The American Dental Association, Missouri Dental Association.

I am active in my community, church and profession.

Living life fully is my mantra.

Not being satisfied to just watch, I have dedicated my life to being on the court of life.

The joy of living life fully and playing full-out has been my stand.

I and my staff constantly improve our knowledge to provide the latest techniques of quality dental care for our patients.

I am now active in the Kansas Dental Association and Fifth District Dental Society of Kansas.

For more than 20 years I was a member of the Missouri Dental Associaton and while  President of the Missouri Dental Association, I had the opportunity to work with the best dentists in the State of Missouri. As a leader of Missouri dentists, I was able to get improvements in access to care, improve information and leadership with medical doctors, alternative medicine and dental hygienists of Missouri.

I have been fortunate to have training in forensic dentistry and put those skills to work in identification of disaster victims-bringing closure to grieving families.

Using my journalism skills from high school and college,  I was the editor of the Greater Kansas City Dental Society Journal of the Midwestern Dentist for 19 years after being president of that organization in 1989. I am now Editor Emeritus.

Being a delegate to the American Dental Association has given me insight into the challenges facing patients and dentists nation-wide.

I was fortunate to serve as Chairperson of the American Dental Association's    Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations. I was elected to this council from among 100,000 dentists in the ADA. This council deals with seeing that Americans do not suffer from needless dental disease.

Taking many hours of continuing education each year, I keep up with the changes facing dentistry and medical care. I always encourage my staff to attend and bring the best techniques back to our office for the benefit of our patients.

Being a member of the American Dental Association,   Missouri and Kansas Dental Association,   the Greater Kansas City Dental Society,

Fifth District Dental Society of Kansas,

   Association of Dental Editors,

American College of Dentistry,

    American Society of Forensic Odontologists,

and dental study clubs has given me ample opportunity to learn new techniques and skills.

I pursued my interest in history and have been the  president of the American Academy of the History of Dentistry.

My staff and I contribute many hours of volunteer service to our community thru Give Kids a Smile, activities with the ADA and Kansas Mission of Mercy  CLICK HERE:

Great News:  Dr Nelson now works with geriatric patients and nursing homes!

Caring for older adult patients is a major challenge that the dental profession faces today

What if you could better the Quality of Life of your elderly parent?  Dental Plaque and calculus can cause pneumonia in the elderly!

.

Dental treatment for the geriatric patient will be in high demand for the decades ahead.

An older adult's medical, functional and psychological status should be considered in each phase of dental  treatment.

Careful dental evaluation of the patient through a well-structured examination and care based on sound principles and concepts continues to be the standard of care.

Clinical adaptability is the key to dental treatment success with the geriatric patient.

No one procedure, material or technique is adequate for all elderly patient treatment success.

Modification of standard procedures within the limits of medical, functional and psychological status can make the difference between success and failure.

The Best Walking Partner: Man vs. Dog

Is walking with man’s best friend better than walking with man?
A dog will never try to talk you out of going for a walk.

Is it better to walk a human or to walk a dog?

New research from the University of Missouri has found that people who walk dogs are more consistent about regular exercise and show more improvement in fitness than people who walk with a human companion. I

To the surprise of the researchers, the dog walkers showed a big improvement in fitness, while the human walkers began making excuses to skip the workout.

Walking speed among the dog walkers increased by 28 percent, compared with just a 4 percent increase among the human walker

“In the human walking group, they were regularly discouraging each other from walking,” she said. “Missouri is a hot state. We would hear them saying: ‘It’s hot today. I don’t want to walk, do you?’ ”

The response from participants in the dog-walking group — and their dog companions — was very different.

“When the people came to the animal shelter, they bounced off the bus and said, ‘Where’s my dog?”’ Ms. Johnson said. “And the dogs never gave any discouragement from walking.”

Ms. Johnson said she suspects differences will show up in other areas, like depression and anxiety.

Many people in the dog-walking group stopped using canes and walkers. “They would say, ‘Now I’m physically fit enough to take my dog for a walk,”’ Ms. Johnson said.
